The historical Hotel Alcaldeza is strategically located in a tranquil and relatively safe area in Gascue in the heart Santo Domingos historical National District. We are within walking distance from the world famous Colonial Zone an area that dates back to the time of Christopher Columbus. From our hotel you can visit the numerous attractions the old city of Santo Domingo has to offer, such as: the very first Cathedral of the Americas, built around 1523; the oldest street in the Americas Las Damas which has many historical houses from Columbus time; the Panteon where many of the heroes and Patriots from Dominican history are interred. You can visit Plaza Espana, where the Columbus Family lived; Plaza Espana is also a large open area where the Secretary of Culture sponsors concerts on the weekends for tourists. There are also numerous restaurants and bars to choose from. You can visit Fort Ozama, with its imposing statue of the Royal Historian of the New World Don Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo y Valdes; many historically significant persons were held prisoner at Fort Ozama including Christopher Columbus himself, the Spanish explorer and long time resident of Santo Domingo, Rodrido de Bastidas. The Father of the Dominican Republic, Juan Pablo Duarte himself was held prisoner there, as was Juan Pablo Duartes most loyal compatriot, Juan Isidro Perez, El Ilustre Loco among many others. You can also visit numerous historical churches that can be found throughout the Colonial Zone. If you walk up the long shopping area on the famous street El Conde you can see Independence Park that has the Tomb of the Fathers of the Country Duarte, Sanchez and Mella and much more.
