This was an important centre right from Roman times and proof of its development and importance is given by the fortifications built under the Venetian dominion and developed during Napoleonic times and then under the Austrians who made Peschiera into one of the fortresses of the "four-sided stronghold". Today, the era of armies and battles is long gone and the streets now offer shops, restaurants, ice-cream shops, hotels, camp-sites and facilities for free-time activities. The genuine and delicious cuisine is based on products from the lake and from the countryside surrounding the town. The dishes are appropriately accompanied by the excellent wines produced in this area : Bardolino, Chiaretto, Bianco di Custoza and Lugana.
