We were traveling from New England to Florida. We checked in and experienced the large rooms, beautifully remodeled bathrooms, cozy bar, and distinguished dining room with an outstanding menu and beautifully plated food. All the staff, from desk clerk to valets to dining wait staff were generous with their time and helpful. This is a historic Hilton property. It was not planned but we stayed two nights.

“Pleasant Surprise”

First time visiting Hotel Petersburg, and pleasantly surprised with ambience, service, food and drinks. Our valet service from Siaani was extremely pleasant and she was very knowledgeable about the area.

Hotel Petersburg may occupy a 110-year old building, but upon arrival I was grateful for some 21st century innovations. One was the phone app (Hilton’s, to be specific) that permits remote check-in and provides a virtual key. This became helpful when upon our arrival, there was a logjam at the front desk: the sole clerk was dealing with arriving patrons who found their reserved suite inexplicably downgraded, and there was apparently no manager to resolve the problem and free the clerk. Once we were in the room, we did find staff to assist us with another issue: where was the self-parking we had paid for? Did we need some special marking for our car? The answers to these questions (one block west and no) were not apparent from either the signage in the lot or the hotel’s website. The other useful innovation was the “text the hotel staff” feature available at this property. Once we had put some clothes and toiletries away and headed out for dinner, I noticed an unexpected problem: the room had no desk, table, or chair. (The website indicated that the room was supposed to have a desk and task chair.) While at dinner, I texted the staff, requesting that we be at least provided a chair. Indeed, there was a chair sitting in the hallway in front of the room when we returned from dinner. The staff was friendly and responsive to our needs. The building was reopened as a hotel fairly recently after over a half-century as a vacant hulk. The designers did an exceptional job with the hotel’s public areas. The lobby offers attractive and comfortable seating, and the restaurant and bar areas are the most stylish in downtown Petersburg. (We were very pleased with our dinner in the restaurant.) Upstairs, the wood room doors, hallway carpet, and original transoms are quite impressive. Perhaps the design budget was exhausted by the time to furnish the rooms. Our room (211) didn’t look like a cookie-cutter chain property, but wasn’t distinctive in any way — other than the lack of a desk, table, or (initially) chair. The bathroom was functional, we found all the outlets and storage space we needed, and the room was very quiet. Finally, a bit about the neighborhood. Petersburg has a bad reputation — including with the area native whose funeral we were in town to attend. It is not entirely deserved. On the one hand, there is a sense that the city’s peak vitality occurred around the time the hotel building was constructed. Over the past century, prosperity has largely eluded the city. But it is not blighted — there are several restaurants and cafes within a few minutes walk of the hotel, and interesting historic residential neighborhoods a few blocks away. Nor is it unsafe. I never encountered anything disturbing on the streets. More often, I never encountered anyone at all. For those wanting a property with an interesting backstory in a walkable area, Hotel Petersburg fits the bill. Overall rating: 3.7 of 5. Had our room included a desk/table and a task chair, the rating would have risen to 4.2.

We spent three nights at Hotel Petersburg in January and found the hotel and location excellent for a winter get away. The historic hotel has been nicely updated, preserving the character of the building while providing stylish decor, comfortable bedding, and modernized bathrooms. We ate dinner twice and breakfast once at the hotel’s restaurant. The food was excellent and service for our evening meals was outstanding. We were disappointed that housekeeping missed cleaning our room both days in spite of me messaging the hotel the afternoon after our first night while housekeepers were still on our floor and receiving a reply from the front desk that housekeeping “will get right on it.” They did not. The next day, I was surprised to return to our room after being out for the day to find that housekeeping collected wet towels and emptied a waste basket, but did not make the bed, provide clean wash cloths, replenish coffee cups etc. At check-in, we chose to use valet parking which we were told by the person who checked us in the cost would be $20 per day. This is also the price shown on the Hilton app. The cost is actually $22. Upon checking out, I obtained a printed statement to verify our food credit was as expected and it was. I was however stunned by the $154 parking charge. This was eventually “corrected” to $66, but only after a number of missteps by hotel personnel including further erroneous charges days after our stay ended. I appreciate that after I emailed a manager outlining the issues, she apologized and the excessive charges were refunded to our credit card.
